Bravely Default entered development as a Nintendo 3DS sequel to Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, but Square Enix decided to repurpose the game as a new yet related IP with an original title so as not to confuse modern-day Final Fantasy fans, as the game's direction is different from the modern games of the series, and closer in style to the older installments. The development team settled on the name Bravely Default: Flying Fairy so that the subtitle would abbreviate to "FF", as a reminder of the game's origins.[4]
Kensuke Nakahara, director and head of development at Silicon Studio, has said that the main challenge was to make Bravely Default: Flying Fairy a "traditional" RPG, and not an old-fashioned or overtly nostalgia-inducing one. He noted that there are many Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy fans on the development team, and many ideas they threw around were the sort that had been seen in previous titles, and would please many fans, but the developers wanted to avoid including things just to give players twinges of nostalgia.[6]
The game spawned a free-to-play web browser game, Bravely Default: Praying Brage, and a pseudo-sequel, Bravely Second: End Layer. Another game called Bravely Archive, was released in Japan targeting mobile devices in January 2015. Another title called Bravely Default: Fairy's Effect was released in Japan on March 23, 2017. A true sequel, Bravely Default II, was announced late 2019 as being in development, and is scheduled for release in February 2021.
While it was hinted in a conversation between Yasumi Matsuno and Akihiko Yoshida,[27] the director Tomoya Asano, in a September 2013 interview with Famitsu, confirmed that a sequel was in development, and that one of the implementations present would be a battle system less like the traditional turn-based model.[28]

The player travels through Route 18, Couriway Town, and Route 19 to Snowbelle City, where the Gym Leader, Wulfric, is missing. To find him, the player navigates Route 20 to get to the Pokémon Village. Wulfric explains that the Pokémon there were once abused. Wulfric returns to the Snowbelle Gym and rewards the player with the Iceberg Badge for defeating him. With the final Badge in hand, the player heads through Route 21 to Victory Road and the Pokémon League, where they defeat Fire-type specialist Malva, Steel-type specialist Wikstrom, Dragon-type specialist Drasna, Water-type specialist Siebold, and Champion Diantha. After the player enters the Hall of Fame, Sycamore organizes a parade for the player. During the parade, AZ asks the player for a battle. Afterward, AZ says he finally knows what it means to be a Trainer again, and his Floette appears from the sky and is reunited with him.
The games sold more than four million copies during their first weekend on sale.[14][15] In the fiscal year of their release, they sold 12.26 million units.[16] As of September 30, 2022, Pokémon X and Y have sold 16.65 million copies worldwide, making these the highest selling Pokémon games on the Nintendo 3DS.[17]
Pokémon X and Y sold 1,866,570 units on their first week on the Japanese market, being 961,003 from Pokémon X and 905,567 from Pokémon Y, with a sell-through of 83.30% and 78.23% respectively.[18] By January 3, 2021, the end of their 378th week, they had sold 4,247,847 copies, being 2,245,721 from Pokémon X and 2,002,126 from Pokémon Y.[19]
The soundtrack contains most of the background music and effect music from the games. The music is composed by Shota Kageyama (Sound Director of Pokémon X and Y), Hitomi Satō, Minako Adachi, and Junichi Masuda. Pokémon X and Pokémon Y are the first main series titles since Pokémon Gold and Silver that Gō Ichinose did not work on as a composer, since he shifted to a side project of Game Freak's during the development of Pokémon X and Y.
Some games may not take to this mode nicely - for example, Super Mario 3D Land will crash if you attempt to create a new save file (Likely because you don't have any Miis). Additionally, pressing the HOME button, or any software functions that would otherwise do the same as pressing the HOME button, will simply shut off the console. This mode could have been used for kiosk demos that have the Home button disabled, or for Nintendo's repair centers to be able to boot into a diagnostics card if the system can't boot into the setup for whatever reason. Trying to play a New Nintendo 3DS game (such as Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition for example) on a non-New 3DS using this feature will freeze the system at a black screen.
Some 3DS kiosk demos and other various demonstration software can also set a flag in their icon file that will cause them to auto-boot without this key combination held. The system checks for this flag before checking for the button combination.
This model of 3DS boasts a large boost from its predecessors. It includes more RAM, NFC support, a slot for MicroSD cards instead of standard SD cards, ZL and ZR buttons, and a second analog nub beside the ABXY buttons, eliminating the need for the Circle Pad Pro. It also has some software improvements, such as the ability to play video files directly in the built-in browser. The New 3DS has support for interchangeable cover plates, allowing users a degree of customization.
This model is exactly the same as the New 3DS hardware-wise, but it is bigger and lacks the ability to change the faceplates; however, just like every other Nintendo XL system, it has larger screens. In a business move by Nintendo of America, only this version of the New 3DS line was available in North America for nearly eight months, as the XL outsold the regular-sized one by a margin of three to one. Certain units come with IPS screens, while others come with TN screens; however, Nintendo does not distinguish between them.
